The 6th
Century BC Book of Ezekiel is composed primarily from the prophet's own
preaching, edited extensively by his disciples. According to The New Jerome
Bible Handbook, "Ezekiel believes that God punishes unfaithfulness to the
covenant with political disaster, as Isaiah and Jeremiah did also. He speaks of
unfaithfulness to the covenant as adultery and prostitution. ... He develops
traditional themes in this way: (a) Yahweh is Lord of all nations and events.
(b) Yahweh is holy. (c) Worship and moral holiness are very important. (d) Each
generation is responsible for its own acts. (e) God intends to restore Israel
out of a totally free gift of grace." (pp.106f.)
