"Nolan Evaluates Chapel" (Trinity Tripod, 1959) -
During the final semester of my senior year, I was asked by the
Tripod staff to write this analysis. As president of the
Canterbury Club, I had chaired it dissolution, because the then
Chaplain with whom there was great dissatisfaction was trying to
run it as his nonintellectual campus tool. See pages 212-213 in

History (Trinity College, 2000).

Caught by Photographer at the Yale Co-Op (New Haven
Register, 1991) - Approaching retirement in a year, I used a
1/2 "personal day" for an excused absence from a dreadful
faculty meeting to visit New Haven, an hour's drive from home.
In addition to browsing at the Yale Divinity bookstore, I had
lunch and concluded the pleasant visit with some shopping at the
Yale Co-Op, where I bought a suit jacket. During the process, a
photographer and the manager showed up and asked if a picture
could be taken for a newspaper article. I was glad that I was
using an excused absence (to which I was entitled without
explanation); my department chairman lived in New Haven and
would surely see the picture in the Sunday edition - though he
never mentioned it!

Tabor Academy
(1954) - The Tabor summer session was required as an
orientation to the one-year (1954-55) postgraduate study program
at Tabor. A course in German along with recreational electives
filled the calendar, e.g., swimming, sailing (earned
certification in sailing the small sailboats), weekend cruise on
the "Tabor Boy" (92' schooner), the crafts shop, etc. It was in
the crafts program that the prize-winning pectoral cross was
completed (referred to in the letter). Other Tabor photos are at
www.philosophy-religion.org/nolan/tabor.htm.

Harvard (1976) - Regrettably, despite my college president's
full support for a sabbatical to develop a medical ethics course
at Harvard, the Board of Trustees turned it down, because
"nurses and the public do not need such studies; only doctors
need them." My comment that the Board was suffering from
"cranial rectal inversion" made it to the newspapers! :-) I have
apparently trashed the various newspaper articles criticizing
the Board. In any case, about 1978 I spent a full semester's
sabbatical at Yale Medical and Divinity Schools and brought back
to the college a well-prepared course suitable for the nursing
curriculum and as an elective for other students. The St. Mary's
Hospital School of Nursing required it, too. The course was
always fully registered and often had two sections offered per
semester. I received a wonderful letter from a student (the
State Chairman-M.D. of the CT Pro-Life organization) praising
the course for its fair, even-handed presentation of various
views on each topic.

Odds and Ends
- Archbishop
of Canterbury's letter (1961) and his official signature
"Geoffrey Cantuar" in my Prayer Book. - In 1952, while in
high school, I attended the opening service of the Episcopal
Church’s triennial General Convention held that year in Boston
and a related service held at the historic Old North Church. At
the latter, I prayed from the Book of Common Prayer given to me
by my parents five years earlier! The Archbishop of Canterbury,
Dr. Geoffrey Francis Fisher, was on hand as a welcome and
beloved visitor. After the Service, he took a moment to sign a
15-year-old boy’s Prayer Book, a custom for some of us!
In 1960 Dr. Fisher met the Roman Pope, an event that
touched me deeply, because Dad was Roman Catholic. I wrote a
letter of gratitude to the Archbishop for his ecumenical
gesture.
By 2008 I set aside my former interests in “the great
cause of bringing the Church of Rome and the Anglican Church
into an alliance of unity, truth and concord.” I see no
realistic method(s) by which that can be done.
