Round and About

Invited to address a July 11, 2005, press conference at
West Palm Beach City Hall after arson at the
Presidential Women's Center, WPB.

My name is Richard Nolan. I am a retired Episcopal priest and philosophy professor now serving as a year round volunteer at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lake Worth.

One year ago, the WomanCare Center in Lake Worth experienced an attack of apparent arson similar to the recent attack on the Presidential Women’s Center. I am here to speak out against and denounce the pattern of violence which is affecting our local communities.

As we work to resolve our crucial moral issues, violence is never a permissible or justified course of action. Violence only erodes and deteriorates our communities and furthers us from any peaceable resolutions.

All citizens have a right to make their positions known on all sides of every ethical issue. However, no citizen has the right to use tactics that harass, disrupt, frighten, intimidate, threaten, or bewilder other citizens as they legally implement their critical, personal decisions.

Furthermore, it is unjust to obstruct the right of medical personnel from practicing their legally sanctioned vocations.

When prudent and necessary, as I believe it is in the matter before the Commission, government has a moral obligation to protect law abiding citizens from acts of extreme violence, invasions of privacy, and any other unwarranted interferences.  I ask the Commission, therefore, to commit to taking action against this cowardly act of violence and to ensure the safety of all citizens of our communities.
